What does “Living with Purpose” mean? Life is an adventure, the saying goes, so what gets you up in the morning? In my life I have met so many people who dread the coming day they feel like they are stuck on a Ferris wheel doing the same thing, day in and day out.
For others, they look at the new day and wonder what adventures await them.
What drives people in either direction?
There have been lots of books written on the topic. From self-help, to motivational, to spiritual. In all that has been written, I see a set pattern emerging. People are motivated by:
- Health
- Money
- Relationships
- Life Stages
So, let’s look at each of these.
When it comes to health, people have different driving factors to maintaining a healthy lifestyle. In my case, I control my diabetes through eating and exercising. I play Pickleball and stay active. Others enjoy “working out” thoughts of getting a toned and healthy body.
We all know living a healthy lifestyle increases longevity, and for the most part makes moving into the later stages of life more enjoyable.
Living in a 55+ community I see people in their late 70s and 80s still out running, biking, playing court games, golfing, etc. They seem to have enjoy having a positive outlook on life.
Not at all what I saw earlier in life, when it seemed older people were placed in retirement communities and/or homes, sitting around all day doing nothing. Today older people are living longer and enjoying life.
What about money?
During ones life, as one ages, enjoying life can be done on a balanced budget through thoughtful and careful planning. Taking day trips, visits to interesting places, taking a drive up the coast, or taking a drive into the mountains. These all break the day-to-day mundane existence, while not breaking the bank. Taking pictures to share, traveling in groups, all have the benefits of providing a purpose.
Starting a business or volunteering
Does starting a business or volunteering at an organization give you purpose? For some, helping the infirm, or those not as well off can give purpose. In my case, I find purpose in helping others think out-of-the-box, thus why Seniorsnews.org. For other Habitats for Humanity, soup kitchens, or volunteering at church brings purpose. Find how you can engage and help others. You will not regret it.
Relationships – can never talk about living with purpose without talking about relationships. We are social beings. We need to be around people. Even if we will not admit it. From playing cards, to sports, to walks, to dances or other activities. We yearn to be part of something bigger. Don’t deny yourself, you are a social creature. So go ahead reach out and find others with similar interests. You will find this helps mentally and gives you a purpose to move forward.
