The news broke today that Queen Elizabeth, by the Grace of God, of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland and of her other realms and territories, Queen, Head of the Commonwealth, Defender of the Faith has died.
You may wonder why I, an American is writing about this even in history. I am writing, not because of the historical value, but writing because of my heritage.
For most of us, Queen Elizabeth II has been the only British monarch we have known. Born in 1926, and ascending to the British monarch in 1952.
I was born 5 years after Queen Elizabeth became the British monarch. You see all through my life, whenever I would ask my family where we came from. I was told we were from Texas. Never was I told anything about my family heritage. I honestly think my father did not know.
Not until I was 57 years old, that I finally found out that I have a Scottish heritage. Being from the border-clan Scott area of Scotland. Since then, I took to society work, enriching my own and others knowledge of Scottish and British heritage.
One of the pieces I wrote about in an article was about Sir Robert Falcon Scott and his ill-fated exploration of the South Pole. His travels inspired me, as I felt pride in what was accomplished, including his sacrifices.
Since that time, my views of the Queen changed also. She was not some distant monarch. She was Queen of a country that I felt akin too. I felt pride knowing where my family originated from. Part of that pride was seeing, hearing and experiencing what other knew. That there was a Queen of United Kingdom, who faced the world, and made the world a better place.
Her role in leading the United Kingdom and commonwealth is understated. From times of war, and peace, to personal tragedy. She showed the world what it was like to be a strong leader.
On this day, I wanted to send my deep-felt sorrow to the loss of such a person.
She is now with the Lord and her beloved Phillip eternal.
Rest in Peace.
“God Save the King”
